no signs of letting up. this morning, the firefighters battling the blazes are mourning the loss of their own killed on the frontlines. we have gadi schwartz with more. >> reporter: good morning, erica. we are talking about 8,000 firefighters out there. many of them are learning for the first time this morning that one of their own has been killed in the line of duty. tragedy overnight. the u.s. forest service confirming that firefighter david ruhl was killed battling a fire in the modoc national forest. an engine captain on temporary assignment assignment. in the statement, the forest service called the loss tragic and heart breaking. in northern california, a small neighborhood erupts in flames as propane tanks explode shooting fire balls into palm trees. >> it started raining fire on us. >> reporter: seven mobile homes

destroyed and on the edge of the inferno, firefighters risking their lives to save people's property. >> i heard this loud explosion and ferocious noise. >> reporter: about 70 miles away, same story, different terrain. crews moving to contain the fire that has been torching forest pines. >> we see flames in excess of 100 feet. >> reporter: the rocky fire is the biggest at 18,000 acres. all across california, 23 large fires are burning in the midst of a severe drought. >> with that drought, comes dry vegetation and wind conditions make the potential for firefighting dangerous. >> reporter: the governor declared a state of emergency and national guard to help crews on the ground. this morning, firefighters start another dangerous day of trying to contain the flames.

and this weekend's weather is expected to make conditions more dangerous. red flag warnings issued in the northern part of the state and dry thunderstorms, the worst kind for firefighters are expected to bring heavy lightning and strong wind. erica. >> gadi schwartz, thank you. to the extreme heat which is making matters worse for the firefighters out west. if you have been pouring sweat, you are not alone. the sweltering heat breaking records in some areas with no end in sight. nbc's kristen dahlgren is live with more. >> reporter: good morning, craig. it is about 76 degrees already and going to be going up quickly. they are actually getting ready for a race here in central park which starts in an hour and a half. this morning, we have your every day joggers and cyclists out. they have to get these workouts in early because it is going back up near 90 again today.

closer to 105 to 110 degrees. this is an area that will feel the heat. the northwest, we will feel the heat break tomorrow, monday and tuesday. here, we have to wait until wednesday to get to the low 80s. >> a day we can focus on. we'll take that. dylan, thanks to have you back. we will get to the full forecast in a moment. now the wreckage on reunion island believed to be from flight mh-370. the wreckage is in france to be analyzed by a special lab as searchers continue to scour the island for more clues. we have nbc's bill neely on reunion island. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. from a normally quiet tourist island where they really believe they can help solve an international mystery and where a volcano has just erupted. they are optimistic here that they can find more aircraft debris. now the big piece of debris and

it is from a boeing 777, is now in the hands of aviation experts in france who believe they can unlock its secrets. they packed it carefully. every square inch of the aircraft wing flap may be vital in answering what happened to malaysia 370. the debris has now arrived in france to be analyzed at a specialist defense lab. french police are searching reunion beaches for more debris. locals are making discoveries finding pieces of plastic taken in by police as evidence. the man who found the aircraft part and a battered suitcase here finds water bottles from china and indonesia. half of the passengers were chinese. i hope to find a lot more debris to help solve this mystery, he says, but there is a problem. the truth is, there is every kind of junk on this beach. something that looks like a

machine part. this is a rubber ring from something. it could have fallen off a ship or aircraft or anything. investigators look for debris by air, too. we joined the search along the coast where finding anything more could be tough. there's 120 miles of coastline to search on this island alone. on a nearby island, it is more than 3,000 islands. there are more than two dozen islands they have to search in this general area. so all eyes on the debris they found and what it might tell us. >> we wait for the result of the verification whether it belongs to 777 or it belonged to mh-370. i think that is yet to be verified. >> reporter: these are extraordinary times on the normally sleepy tourist island. a volcano erupting. just miles from where the islanders are trying to unlock the mystery of the missing plane.

and search experts from malaysia have now landed here in reunion to help. but spare a thought for a moment for the relatives of those on board waiting for confirmation that their loved ones died in this ocean and yet unable really ever probably to know exactly how or why unless those black box flight recorders and fuselage of that plane is found. a really difficult situation for them. craig. >> so many waiting for closure. bill neely, thank you. some scary moments for pilots flying into jfk airport. sheinelle is following that story. >> good morning. federal officials are investigating two close calls with passenger jets and drones in new york. a jetblue flight reported a drone friday on approach at jfk airport. shortly afterwards, a delta flight just missed a drone 1400 feet off the ground.

it was below the plane's right wing. and some scary moments for two other flights forced to turn around after takeoff. smoke engulfed a flight after a heated mechanical part. in boston, firefighters boarded a jetblue flight after smoke in that cabin. u.s. fish and wildlife officials made contact with the american dentist wanted for killing cecil the lion. wildlife officials say a representative for walter palmer reached out to the agency thursday. we will have more in our next hour. a lockdown at the white house has been lifted after another trespassing incident. a woman was arrested friday after she reportedly jumped a bike barricade protecting the white house. she is charged with unlawful entry. two relatives of osama bin laden are dead after their plane crashed in england. the victims included osama bin

laden's stepmother and half sister. osama bin laden came from a large wealthy family, some of whom disowned him before the 9/11 attacks. the white house confirmed mullah omar is dead. the circumstances of his death remain unclear. the u.s. once had a $10 million bound bounty on his head. the wrestling world is mourning a legend. "rowdy" roddy piper had a heart attack in his sleep. hulk hogan is devastated telling tmz, he was my best friend. roddy piper was 61. we talked about this. it has been a swing of emotions for one major league baseball player. wilmer flores made headlines for

shoot at an fbi agent. >> reporter: investigators say two years ago, dimaggio killed her mother and brother and setting fire to the home in california. he was accused of abducting anderson and triggering a multistate manhunt. >> did you feel in fear of your life? >> he threatened me. if i ever tried to run that he would kill me and whoever tried to help. >> reporter: they were found in the idaho wilderness where he was killed with a confrontation with fbi agents. his attorney says he should not have been killed. he only fired his gun in the air as a call for help. >> the fbi has released some information, not much. when you put it all together, there are too many unanswered questions. >> reporter: prosecutors say the agents acted reasonably. the department of justice will review the claim and respond in the appropriate manner. meanwhile, hannah anderson's family declined to comment.

this morning on "rossen reports" helping keep your kids safe at the pool this summer. would you know what to do if someone was drowning? "today's" correspondent jeff rossen is down in miami with more. >> reporter: good morning. here we are in the middle of the summer and spending a lot of time around the swimming pool. we know how hard it is to keep track of everybody in here. especially children. did you know that accident at drowning is the number one killer of children ages 1 to 4 and children are ten times more likely to be killed by a pool than a gun. would you know how to spot someone who is drowning and could you rescue him? give me two minutes and i'll show you how to save a life today. right now, a child is drowning in this pool. can you spot him? i'll give you a second. can't find him?

don't feel bad. i couldn't either. let me zoom all the way in. there he is. just went off that tube. it happens that fast. even in a packed pool like this. luckily a lifeguard spots him and saves his life. so this summer with kids and adults jumping in, all of us need to be ready. >> silent and quick. >> reporter: jeff thompson is a certified lifeguard. >> i thought anyone was drowning, they would flail around. >> that is not the case. they can't breathe. >> what does it look like when someone is drowning? >> their feet look like they are climbing upstairs and all of the action is occurring under the water. no splashing. it looks similar to this. >> it looks like you're just relaxing on your back except you are vertical. what do you do if you notice someone drowning? we are about to show you.

i'll play the victim here. jeff shows us how to do it. >> you want to scream for somebody to call 911. don't jump in the water. use a pool skimmer. >> that's a critical tip. keep your pool skimmer handy. >> grab them by the wrists and pull out of the water. and roll them over. start cpr. >> in the movies, they go mouth-to-mouth. >> we don't want to do that. do chest compressions. find the base of the rib cage. you place one heel there and the other hand on top of it lacing your fingers. compression the chest. >> this looks like it could hurt somebody. >> it can break ribs, but it keeps them alive. >> reporter: it sounds like a cliche, but seconds do matter. especially in a drowning. doctors say it comes down to how long the brain goes without oxygen. your ability to identify a drowning victim and get them out

back on a saturday morning with the story of one daughter following in her dad's footsteps. they are both pilots and fulfilled a life long dream. nbc's john yang has more. >> reporter: for scott and jen bern every day is take your daughter to workday. he's an american airlines captain. a 25-year veteran. she has been an american airlines first officer for a year. recently he made the flight announcement both had long hoped for. >> normally, ladies and gentlemen, when i'm in the cockpit and my first officer looks a lot like me.

today, i have a 28-year-old young lady my daughter. >> reporter: in the cockpit, it was all business as they went through the pre-flight check list and followed by takeoff with jen at the controls. >> we realized we can relax and realize who we're flying with. >> reporter: after an hour and a half, as pilot and co- pilot, it was time for jen's landing. >> i wanted it to be smooth. >> she did a beautiful landing. i could not help but smile and say that was beautiful. >> i was glad it went well and seeing my dad's expression was priceless. >> reporter: and mom could not have been happier either. >> a life long dream. i could not have been prouder. >> reporter: of the three of you, who had the biggest thrill that flight? >> i guess it could be each of us. to realize a dream i had since i was 8 was pretty amazing. >> reporter: believe it or not,

the forest service calls this tragic and heart breaking. the rocky fire is the biggest concern to firefighters. it has burned more than 18,000 acres so far. with the dry vegetation and wind conditions make the potential for firefighting dangerous. the governor has declared the state of emergency. he is ordering national guard helicopters to help crews on the ground. all of this, this morning, firefighters start another dangerous day trying to contain the flames with the new that one of their own has lost his life. back to you in the studio. >> gadi, thank you. the union representing the university of cincinnati police officer indicted on murder charges is demanding his job back. they filed a grievance on ray tensing's behalf claiming the university fired him without due process. tensing is accused of murdering

week ago. the coast guard says they are done looking. boys' parents are not giving up hope. nbc's kerry sanders in florida with more. >> reporter: good morning. the reason there are no official searches doesn't mean there are no searches. there are planes over the atlantic this morning looking for the two missing boys, but not from the u.s. coast guard. they are volunteers who have taken to the skies as well as boats to see if they can find the missing children. these two 14-year-old boys. their efforts are funded by a go fund me site that has in excess of $368,000. on day eight of an all-out search for 14-year-old friends perry cohen and austin stephanos. the coast guard said at sunset friday night, the search ended. >> this is particularly painful. >> reporter: for the boys

parents who have not given up hope they are still alive, the effort to find them remains active. only now with volunteers in boats and planes. >> we continue to appreciate everybody's support in this critical time. we know there is a window here. we will do everything we can to bring these boys hope. >> reporter: the two best friends set out a week ago from jupiter, florida. without parental permission, the coast guard feels the boys were headed to the bahamas to fish and hit by a squall. you see by cell phone video, other boaters raced to shore. as the teens headed out. the 19-foot boat was found capsized north of jupiter. the engine cover was missing and cooler and life vests. the coast guard searched for the boys which lasted a full seven days.

lot of bullets found by crime scene investigators this morning. smith died in a shooting here outside the houses. there was so much gun fire, i want to show you take a look at parking lot, there's a bullet lodged in the front hood of this mini van. an indication of how much shooting was going on. as i indicated with the yellow placards, at least 34 shell casings found so far. reports of gunshots heard and we told you already one of them was fatal and 24-year-old donell smith died as a result of the shooting. crime scene investigators have been on the scene all morning. there was a shooting connected to this one that happened within the confines of the 63rd precinct here and in other parts of brooklyn, there were at least two other shootings. one in the 7 1st precinct and one in the 61st.

neither of the cases did the victims end up with injuries. this makes for a violent night. started around 11:00 p.m. into the early morning hours. none of the precincts are in the zones that are in the summer all out program which flooded the region with hundreds of extra officers back at the start of june. this will get the attention of police officials. the shooting here, you can see some of it was underneath the scaffolding behind me. major bebloz de blasio wants as many of these taken down because he sees them as magnets for crime. we're live, sending it back to you guys. >> andrew, thank you. later this morning friends and family members expected to say
